Army
arrests UPDF member in Kawkhali, Rangamati
18
November 2005. One activist of the United People’s
Democratic Front (UPDF) and another supporter were arrested
in Kawkhali of Rangamati District.
The army arrested UPDF activist Prabhat Chakma (42) and
a supporter Sumon Chakma (18) from the village of Gaarichara
Tarabonnya under Kalampati Union. Sumon came to the village
to join the UPDF. His request for party membership was
under consideration while the arrest was made.
After the arrest, the army handed them over to the police
who sent them to Rangamati jail.
It has not been known whether the army brought any specific
charges against them, although it has become routine for
the army to falsely frame the arrested UPDF members under
Arms Act.
